My argument is that blaming Marvel for not catering to your specific, narrow tastes is wrong. It's not Marvel's fault that you'll only read a book if Gambit appears. That's all you. You made the decision that you'd rather follow a specific character than to follow writers who've done work you enjoy. If the character you like is someone who's proven no longer capable of supporting a title, then that's your problem, not Marvel's, and they're under no obligation to prop up a book that's not making enough money to justify its existence simply because you like one of the characters in the book.
I didn't say I “blame” Marvel, there isn't one post where I say that. That is your interpretation based on my saying they should do research. It is my opinion and as opinions go, they are neither right or wrong. They are opinions.
And it is completely okay for me to have my narrow tastes and not follow anyone but the character I do. There is nothing wrong with that. I'm not obligated to like everything. And so what if its on me. This is a hobby.
It is Marvel's problem, its their property. It's their job to promote and cultivate an audience, even if I'm not the audience they are looking for.
Of course there is no obligation to me, nor do I care. But I still get an opinion like everyone else. And I can feel the way I do about them just like everyone else.
You are not selling me on Marvel koolaid today.
I bought ANXF because I like PAD as a writer. He's a great writer who's usually able to make me care about characters I haven't had much interest in. I enjoy his writing, so I followed him. I continued to mostly enjoy his writing on ANXF, even if it never really clicked the way it did in his previous X-Factor work. PAD's given me a lot of enjoyment, so when he starts a new project, I'm willing to trust him to continue to do so. If he writes something I don't enjoy, I won't buy it. As long as he keeps putting out books I enjoy reading, I'll keep buying them. I'm willing to give him a chance to win me over on characters I haven't cared about in the past, because he's proven himself capable of doing so.
You bought for PAD and have disliked every issue. And its great you follow PAD. But what I do know is you put down the cast of this book and you've blasted the art. Which is fine, neither here or there. But for someone who has such extreme dislike for what is in the book, if it was me, I would not buy it. Your devotion to following PAD and your comments in regards to the book conflict with each other. IMO.
Yes, Gambit's had multiple solos and minis. When was the last time any of them had good sales? His last ongoing got cancelled after a year because of low sales. The fact is, he hasn't been relevant since the '90s ended. It's not because Marvel can't figure out what to do with him. It's because few readers actually have any particular interest in what Marvel does with him. They keep trying to find a market, but there isn't one for him any more. He's not leading man material any more. He's supporting character material. The only niche he's fit for is as a secondary character.
That is Marvel's problem – they relegated the character for ten years in a book that was completely irrelevant for him. Yes, I can say, Marvel had a hand in why they can't market the character well. His first solo was canceled because Joey Q wanted to trim down the number of books being released and axed almost all the solos. Yes, he did have a successful run. And Marvel was happy with his last solo because they were only counting on 4 issues, but kept it going til wasn't viable to do so. So, they got their monies worth.
You don't know if there is no market for Gambit, I know, you'll say his solos and what not are canceled to try and prove your point. But I've done the math. They've made money on Gambit repeatedly.
And as I said, I'm sure he'll show up somewhere within a few months of ANXF ending. What's the longest he's ever gone without being in a book? Despite the fact that he's had several chances that have failed, he'll keep getting more. Meanwhile, plenty of other characters don't get chances.
And I hope he does land in a book somewhere but if he doesn't. I'll save money.
