Summary:
Nightcrawler is getting back into the swing of things with life. He's adjusting to the changes within the team as well as the school atmosphere. Storm has already asked him to teach, though he didn't say if he'd agreed or not. A few of the younger gen shows up in the hallway and Cessily calls Sprite lame for being creeped out by Kurt.
There's a short scene with Ororo where she gives him a bit of advice on going foward and a longer scene with Rachel where they're reminiscing and talking a bit about Kitty and what's happened. Kurt now lives in the loft with his bamfs.
He goes to find Amanda. There's no foregrounding of their reunion or even reference to all that's happened between them, it's just ignored, as if they were still together when he died.
A Techno-baddy shows up to attack Amanda and a fight ensues. The bad guy gets away and the issue wraps with them going after him.
Appearing in the issue with dialogue: Storm, Cecilia, Beast, Wolverine, Rachel, Evan, Cessily, Sprite, Rico the bug boy, Amanda
The Good:
The art was nice. Nauck has a good sense of movement and flow and very much enhances the story with his panels.
The pacing was solid. There was no dragging to the story. Everything had purpose and there was a sense of building Kurt's view of the world again. In execution, it was a blend of character development (down time) interspersed with action and a plot driven story.
The scenes with Ororo and Rachel were both nice. It's great to hear Storm's voice again through Claremont. He managed in just a couple of pages to show both her strength and determination as well as her compassion.
As with Storm, I really like CC's Rachel. She's has her aggressive, cynical streak but her heart doesn't get lost.
The Iffy
The narrative was stilted and dated in places. The dialogue flowed fairly well, but the rest was very much a blast from the past.
It's not something that bothers me, but I know some have criticized Claremont for it.
The Bad
The continuity ball with Amanda was solidly dropped. A lot has happened since they were lovers and their last appearance opposite one another gave some clearly stated reasons for why the relationship had ended. It was completely ignored. He was back to playful puppy and she was back to condescending. Not fun.
There was a glaring lack in addressing some of what's really going on in the world. There was a mention of Logan and his healing factor and Kitty and Cyclops' names were thrown out, but that's it. No real reaction one way or the other, he just went for the familial booty call.
