James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, has been fired by Disney from the franchise after a series of juvenile tweets from years ago were surfaced.
Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios, release a statement, saying “the offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him.”
The tweets are tasteless jokes from nine to ten years ago, making light of everything from AIDS sufferers to pedophilia. It is clear that they were meant to be in jest, no matter how juvenile and offensive they may have been. Ironically, the tweets seem to be intentionally dug up by Mike Cernovich, who is affiliated with Alex Jones and other right-wing “provocateurs,” the type of people who typically deride political correctness and social media policing, possibly in an effort to weaponize the “social justice” they are so vocally against.
This is a tough spot for both James Gunn and Disney to be in. It should be clear to anyone examining these tweets in good faith that they were merely jokes, no matter how off color and tasteless. However, the thoughts expressed in the tweets are obviously out of line and unacceptable, giving Disney really no choice but to take him off Marvel projects.

Wow.
There's images of 15 of the tweets in the article I linked to that I can't post here because of their content. A LOT of pedo jokes.
And I don't mean the kind of jokes like "How do you know when it's bedtime at Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch? Whenever the big hand touches the little hand".
I mean 'jokes' where Gunn repeatedly talks about sexual stuff with kids...and him doing sexual stuff with kids and them doing sexual stuff to him.
I get he says he was trying to make 'offensive jokes' to be 'provocative', that he doesn't actually do any of that...
Speaking for myself, I didn't any of it funny or provocative...just offensive, disgusting and gross.
It's the type of stuff most people wouldn't even think inside their own head, much less say out-loud. Posting it on social media for all to see and follow you around forever is beyond stupid. You'd think at some point someone who cares about him would have said "Hey James, you should really stop posting this stuff, delete what is there, and hope people forget it ever existed."
Kind of like when Bendis deleted his old forum 'cause he was "too busy to keep it going anymore" and conveniently got rid of his posted 'sins' and those of many of his friends who posted there...several of whom had transitioned from indie-comic writers trying to shock and offended people, to mainstream-comic writers working for Disney and Time-Warner.
Remember kids, nothing is ever gone on the internet, screenshots and archives live FOREVER.
