I keep meaning to do a thread about X-Men Gold(it is the flagship X-Book right now), from the beginning, and I keep getting further and further behind...
So, I'll start with this:
www.cbr.com/x-men-gold-16/
THE DARTAYUS ODYSSEY Part 1! Invaders from deep within THE NEGATIVE ZONE have come to reclaim one of their own… And they’re taking one of THE X-MEN with them!
Story by Marc Guggenheim
Art by Craig Yeung, Jay Leisten, and Lan Medina
Colors by Andrew Crossley and Frank Martin
Letters by VC's Cory Petit
Cover by Ken Lashley
Publisher Marvel Comics
Where to begin...Is it THE DARTAYUS ODYSSEY Part 1 as stated in the solicit, or is it The Negative Zone War Part 1 as stated in the comic?
I'm going with The Negative Zone War Part 1, because that's what's in the preview pages, and it's sounds more badass...and I'm all about more badass, Teddy Brosevelt.
The art is at least detailed and...gasp...Kitty is actually drawn like a girl instead of a teenage boy...which is an improvement over several issues of this series and a few of the Iceman ongoing(which is like her second home at this point)as well.
Kitty's 'because they are are different line' is a load of crap, and I say that as an X-Men fan. The amount of death, destruction and generalized chaos that can be laid at the feet of mutants in the Marvel Universe is astronomical at this point. If I lived in the Marvel universe I'd be afraid of most mutants and anyone else with super-powers for that matter...and almost anyone with any sense would. It's like being afraid of bombs...only the bombs are also people...and they might detonate without even intending to.
And as Yoda will tell you, fear leads to hate...and hate to the dark side...
It's why mutants make a poor stand-in for real-world minorities, much like the vampires did on True Blood. You can sympathize with the Vamps on True Blood, even like them as people...but if vampires actually existed, they would have to be eradicated or eventually they would consume all of humanity. That's not anti-vampire prejudice, it's just fact.
The people of the Marvel Universe have plenty of life-and-death reasons to fear mutants, not based on irrational prejudice but on rational experiences. And what people fear, they come to hate, because who wants to live in a state of fear?
Until the X-Men stop dealing in false syllogisms and start dealing with the fact that mutants, even including several former and current members of the X-Men, have done plenty to justifiably make people hate and fear them...they are just spinning their wheels and spouting platitudes.
I think the Kitty/Peter stuff is just more of a red herring. Bring back BobKat already...They're keeping Kitty hanging around the Iceman book for some reason.
This arc has potential, but it also has Guggenheim...who has failed to get me interested in much of anything happening in this book so far, despite the fact I really like/outright love several of these characters.
