X-Men's Beast Joins Soule & McNiven's "Uncanny INHUMANS
mashable.com/2015/06/26/uncanny-inhumans-reboot/
It's bad enough that Marvel has been tailoring it's output increasingly in response to CBR's message boards, but it's pretty clear they are actually saying things in interviews to play into "The Complex" thread there, and to 'poke' fans that are concerned with a lot of what Marvel is doing in general.
I've noticed a number of things in interviews lately, Mark Waid's comment (“I like the fact that we ended up with an Avengers team with one white guy on it," Waid told a newspaper. Cue immediate responses, "what if he had said that about a black guy", "white characters are now unwanted and are just considered an impediment to diversity", "white fans are now unwanted"). I can think of a dozen better ways to say what Waid did that would have been diversity-positive rather than sounding white-people negative, but then that wouldn't have set tongues wagging on message boards.
Then there was Jason Arron saying words to the effect(I can't find the interview or I'd quote it) that as a forty-something white guy he is no longer the audience for some of the comics, like the current Thor, that he is writing, and he is okay with that. I get saying you are no longer the sole audience for Thor, but to say you are flat out no longer part of the audience for that book is ridiculous. I just turned forty-one. I dropped Thor during the previous run but picked it back up because I was curious about who the new Thor was. I found it to be very enjoyable, not perfect, but good. If I had read his interview ahead of time, I probably would not have picked it up. The idea to me to make comics successful again would be to try and craft things with broad appeal; not try to trade one niche audience for another. To add new fans, not chase off the old ones in the hope you add enough new ones to not only replace them, but actually net increase your numbers. Some of these things being said in interviews are clearly meant to just provoke outrage or a negative response or get people arguing on message boards and social media. It's the Bendis-model applied to the whole Marvel universe. Do things to provoke 'nerdrage', because getting any attention, even for something negative, is ultimately good attention. Except it is souring people on the company.
I like the Inhumans, have several of their series from over the years(the two with art by Jae Lee and Landron are probably my favorites), but as an X-Men fan, there is no way I am buying a book that is clearly in part being used to actively troll X-Men fans.
So much of what Marvel is doing just seems so immature. The endless stunts, trolling fan-bases of characters and even entire franchises, pitting fans against each other; going about adding more diversity to their comics in a way that it is bordering on turning it into a circus act, and is increasingly the subject of mockery and jokes even from the people who were wanting more diversity in the first place. I don't see how Marvel is getting so much right with their movies, and so much wrong with their comics.
Axel said in an interview that he was hearing the usual complaints, that fans were leaving one company for another. He clearly didn't give it any credence. Like that is just what fans do when dissatisfied: leave DC for Marvel, or Marvel for DC, ping ponging back and forth between the two. Except at some point you get tired of being a ping pong ball and just leave and don't come back.
For April, Marvel had fourteen Marvel Universe titles (not counting Star Wars) that sold over 50,000 copies in print, and two, All New X-Men and Uncanny Avengers were only a few hundred issues above that. The number of titles they had that were barely above, at, or below cancellations numbers were staggering, especially considering some of those titles were recently relaunched. Even success stories like Ms. Marvel, which apparly sells well in digital(we don't get to see those numbers) is ranked 92nd by issue 14 with sales at 32,058, and that is with the title being one of only two Marvel books selling at $2.99 instead of $3.99. It's 25% cheaper than almost every other Marvel book(and most comics) being published and barely is in the too 100 of print comics being sold. If it gets relaunched at $3.99, as expected, that price-bump could be the death of it. Iron Man was at 32,000, Miles Morales-Spidey(at 29,318) and Sam Alexander-Nova(at 18,228) titles not that far above and even below cancellation numbers, respectively, and Captain America And Mighty Avengers(18,362) was also well below cancellation numbers by issue 7. It looks like if Lady Thor's success from her solo doesn't carry over to the new Avengers book, that much-hyped title could be in major trouble very quickly.

Eight months will have passed between that monumental finale and the beginning of all Marvel's reboots — about 60 titles in all will re-start with fresh No. 1s — and something "mysterious" will have transpired in that time between the mutants and the Inhumans. Whatever it is, it will have landed Hank McCoy on the side of the royal family (something we didn't know before), as well as Johnny Storm (something we sort of did).
Speaking of, the "Uncanny" label is something that the X-Men and Avengers have carried on their banners over the years, though It really belongs to the Inhumans.
"'Uncanny' was first associated with the Inhumans, not everybody knows that," Soule told Mashable. "Because it wasn’t the huge explosion with X-Men at first … it means, and I think it fits the Inhumans better anyway, 'strange and mysterious.' It just means, 'This is a big deal, Marvel readers!'"
That "big deal" extends well beyond this royal family of Black Bolt and estranged wife Medusa — both of whom will be searching for their lost son. The Terrigen Mist was released across the Earth in the "Infinity" battle with Thanos, which brought down the family's sanctuary floating city of Attilan. That event awakened Inhuman powers in countless people all across the planet, including the new Ms. Marvel, Kamala Khan, now a member of the central Avengers team.
"It’s this awesome, swirling superhero story that has a lot of things going on — and is a blast," Soule said.
It's bad enough that Marvel has been tailoring it's output increasingly in response to CBR's message boards, but it's pretty clear they are actually saying things in interviews to play into "The Complex" thread there, and to 'poke' fans that are concerned with a lot of what Marvel is doing in general.
