Maybe we can get some real discussion going on here.
For the past decade or so, we've had story after story about the life and times of Cyclops with Wolverine as the thorn in his side. We've read all about his romantic difficulties, his reaction to "no more mutants" and subsequent obsession with Hope as the key to bringing them back, him turning the X-Men into soldiers, creating Utopia as a separate mutant nation, Schism, going to war with the Avengers, taking on the mantel of the Phoenix and killing his mentor and father figure and now his 'revolution'. In short, every major franchise wide story has had Cyclops as a focus, with Wolverine as his polar opposite and the rest of the vast cast of the X-Men in supporting or reactionary roles with no real voice in determining franchise direction.
Is it time for that to change? Are you satisfied with a once complex franchise narrowed down to essentially being about a single man and the reactions of other characters to that man? Are you ready to see others step forward from relative irrelevance to become focal players as well?
I'm not asking if you want Cyclops to go away altogether, I'm simply asking if it's time to spread the focus out and build at least a core group of the X-Men back up into what they were in former times -- relevant to the franchise wide story.
The second part I'm curious about is, if you answered "yes", who are five characters you'd like to see step up and why?
This is a serious question, so please don't say someone like Lockheed or Toad, etc unless you have a compelling reason why you think they could logically take a pivotal role going forward.
The ones I'd like to see gain some relevancy are:
1) Storm -- she makes sense to at least be the one co-leading the JGS side of the X-Men. At least in my opinion, Schism would've been a far more compelling story if it had been between she and Cyclops, rather than Cyke and Wolverine.
2) Nightcrawler -- he just came back from the dead. He hasn't chosen sides in Schism, instead, he's approaching the whole thing as if it's a family quarrel. Of all the X-Men, he's the one that has most lived Xavier's dream of coexistence in the past and could remind them of what is at stake going forward.
3) Emma -- I'm tired of her being written as an accessory. I want her to be given a strong voice once more. It makes sense for her to go to extremes to get what she wants or what she thinks mutants deserve and I'd like her stepping forward to lead, rather than simply following Cyclops.
4) Rogue -- give her back to the X-Men. She's worked on the other side, she's seen the cost of not cooperating, so let her bring her new-found wisdom back home with her.
5) Kitty -- she's more than a babysitter. She grew up in the X-Men. She's canny enough to know what's at stake and stubborn and determined enough to do something about it. Let her.
Honorable mentions : Rachel and Bishop. They both know the price of failure all too well. They've both been compelling characters with depth in the past and strong individual voices. I'd like to see that again.
Of the O5, the only ones I find to be compelling are Iceman and Angel, to a lesser degree. I think both have plenty of (currently) wasted potential. I'd love to see a version of Jean brought in who is like the AOA version, but I really just don't see it ever happening in 616.
