It seems that every two weeks or so, a new rumor or event takes comic book forums by storm and causes X-Men readers to jump to conclusions that lead to panic and depression. It seems to have all stemmed from the rumors of Marvel canceling the Fantastic Four. Of course, most people believe it is due to the fact that the film rights of the FF reside at FOX Studios and not Marvel/Disney.
From there, came the rumor that people discuss more than any other.. that Marvel Comics would reboot it's line in 2015. Only in this reboot, the X-Men would not be included. People from Marvel, Brian Michael Bendis included, have "shot down" these rumors. I put shot down in quotations because they rarely ever say "These rumors are false." It's always a comment that leaves some room for discussion.. like, "Why would I spend my time writing the X-Men if they are going to be canceled?"
Much more recently, the panels at San Diego Comic Con were announced for Marvel, and lo and behold, there is no X-Men panel like there has been in years past. This year, the X-Men panel will be included in the AXIS panel. Meanwhile, there are still panels for the Avengers and the Spider-man books.
Since the beginning I've believed that Marvel can't possibly cancel the X-Men. It's not just a "not smart" business decision, it's incredibly asinine. Marvel rebooting their line seems much more realistic, though. Marvel people continuously say that "Marvel does not reboot," but these same people say that the day they crossed the 616 with the Ultimate Universe is the day they've run out of stories to tell. Well.. has Marvel run out of stories? Because Miles Morales is soon to be appearing in All-New X-Men.
I still believe X-Men comics will continue to be published for a very long time, but it is interesting to see all of these strange happenings and rumors constantly pop up. What are your thoughts on the subject? Should we all start stocking up on back issues? Will you continue to read if Marvel reboots? Is Disney that sinister that they would have Marvel cease publishing X-Men comics to cut off source material for FOX?
