Or "Nobody Calls Me a Replacement!"
This thread is to celebrate all things Rachel, the alternate futuristic daughter of Jean Grey and Scott Summers who was initially brought into the X-Men during Days of Future Past.
Rachel came from a grim and disturbing future where mutants had been hunted down to the point of extinction. She, herself, was captured by Ahab and turned into a hound, using her powers of telepathy to track down her fellow mutants, including the X-Men family she grew up with.
It's true that both her imagery and powerset as well as her association with the Phoenix Force is a mirror of her mother's, but she's evolved over time into a very different character.
Over the years, a unique personality and back story has been carved out for Rachel, apart from her parents. Whereas Jean was always the sweet, girl-next-door type, defined by her goodness and capacity for love as well as a certain innocence, Rachel is a stubborn survivor all too familiar with the dark side of life. She's had to come to terms not only with profound loss, but also live with the guilt of her days as a hound and the consequences which has given her a certain cynical earthiness that her mother lacked. Rachel is also unafraid to speak her mind. Though her capacity for love and nurturing was shown in her willingness to care for her baby half-brother, Nathan, as Mother Askani, she often keeps people at arm's length.
She's been on and off with membership in the X-Men over the years, sometimes spending extended periods of time away. She was a founding member of Excalibur and is currently on the staff of the JGS.
She's also the only character to successfully harness the Phoenix Force energies for any length of time without being corrupted and that speaks volumes about her strength of will and spirit.
