Ok, I know this is about "Ongoing Titles" but it seems the discussion has already touched these points. If its too much or inappropriate, mods, feel free to delete it. But this is partly relevant to why I have stopped certain ongoings and books in general and part of the "plight" for me.
Warning: Long-winded post ahead!
I know you guys are used to seeing me rant on CBR and probably tired of it but I'm going to go out on a limb here and say, re: Remy, Kurt and Iceman - prejudice maybe? Both Kurt and Remy do have European connections and both are not your stereotypical alpha male like Logan and Scott so I' m going to also add some homophobia in there as well. Gambit was said to be bisexual and Kurt has been seen as having an "feminine" quality. Yet look at Logan and Scott. Both have had an obsessive and sometimes almost stalkerish attitude towards Jean and Logan has slept with who knows how many people. Logan's behavior towards Jean is played up or seen as romantic and tragic. Logan slept with Squirrel Girl but it isn't seen as skeevy but Logan just being a bad boy. Logan has slept with more women than those two. Notice Piotr didn't even sleep with Kitty and all the crap he gets. He isn't that American loved bad boy, so, are you noticing a trend here? When Kurt goes bad they make him a pervert or a Nazi. Notice how the entire Rasputin clan is considered insane or evil. Notice Pietro, Lorna, Wanda and Magneto. Margali, Jimaine, Stefan too. Does Marvel have a thing against Gypsy's? How about crazy black man Bishop? Logan saves Storm from 'Black' Panther marriage hell and turned into his arm candy and now she talks like she's from the Ghetto in her own book. They also promote the jokes about Iceman being gay and then when he goes bad he's a possible rapist. Why? Because he's not your normal alpha he must really be a secret pervert inside. I'm also tired of double standards where certain individuals can do awful things. Logan has been a nazi, in the mafia, killed Native Americans and was a part of internment camps but is just considered to this day a man with a troubled past but has a heart of gold while others have done less and are put in a villain light. Tony Stark is another. They wiped his sins clean and he gets to start anew but Bishop was the butt of a joke in that low tier X-Force book they had recently or a mass murderer. Logan is the guy who just does "what has to be done or no one else can." Again, not saying Logan is bad, I used to love him but I don't like how he has been used lately. I write and draw him a lot in my spare time.
How many times do women go insane with power? How many times do they get to live it down? It ruins their characters. When Logan turns evil he is the victim of brainwashing or reality and gets to go on like nothing happened and Scott too. Logan gets to have a cover based off of the "Piata," in his death. There is way too much evidence to me over the years of the rampant racism, sexism, homophobia, classism and misandry and American exceptionalism, hell - nerdism (as silly as it sounds) that runs rampant in it. The "othered" characters always fair the worst - constant cannon fodder, turned into villains, doormatts or are the punchline of jokes. I used to give it a pass because they had good to outweigh those bad points. But for me there is nothing good to outweigh it. Its clear to me Marvel is in no way interested in changing things for the long term and wants to produce the same trends over and over. And I've been giving them less of my money.
Last but not least, is their public attitude. They cry about how horrible fans are on CBR but do the same thing in their own interviews and their Twitters. They cry foul and victimhood and give us these really condescending interviews. They pretend to be so above it all but they are hypocrites. They outright lie to some of their writers with promises then they don't follow through once hired. I also don't like their open favoritism to certain writers and their subtle trashing of others. They have no interest in pushing good stories but current trends from other media and stereotypes and bad behavior as entertainment. And the nerve of it all is they want to keep charging us more and more money. The good books keep getting canned. They don't hype the good books as much and they fail sooner. Then they blame it on the fans or the creators. Wanna bet they will hype up Gambits French accent while he's being a pervert? Making fun of Rachel's abuse like she enjoyed it and Kurt in Ahab clothing was one shoe, the other shoe was skeevy Gambit. If I have to choose between creepy Kurt or doormat (religious stereotype) all the time then its a no go. I personally think it sends a bad message.
Someone on CBR said the new hero fantasy is acting horrible and being the one to get away with it, its only bad if your caught or uncool. And I just have no interest in that.
I've been cutting down on my Marvel purchases to almost none. Ms. Marvel is the exception for me (I fear for what will happen to her when she is no longer popular or no longer serves Marvels purpose to look open minded). So if you don't see me as much that's why. But I'll still talk about the older comics and Marvel stuff in general and see how you guys are doing. You probably think I'm being overly dramatic but this is how I feel. Sorry to rain on peoples parade. You can stop rolling your eyes now. :-p
End post.
