I find the "limited shelf life" complaint to be silly. A good book is still good if it only lasts a year. I've loved tons of books that I knew wouldn't last long, because at least I still got great stories.
The books I'll be picking up:
Extraordinary X-Men, Ultimates, New Avengers, All-New All-Different Avengers, A-Force, Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, Silk, Spider-Man 2099, Angela. Only 10 of the 45 books announced so far. There's still 15 more to go, so we'll see how many of those end up on my pull list. I wouldn't expect more than 4 or 5 more to make it to my pull list, so it will be a little bit smaller than it has been for a long time. I do expect Silver Surfer to continue, and probably Squirrel Girl, so that'd bring me to 12.
A lot of them don't appeal to me, but I still think they're pretty cool idea, and I think they'll be great books. Just not books I want to spend money on.
A lot of it comes down to not enough creative teams that really thrill me, or characters I'm really passionate about. Al Ewing's a great writer, and I love the casts of his two Avengers books - Ultimates, in particular, has me absolutely thrilled. The lack of Gillen and KSD is really disappointing. I also hoped for Felipe Smith to get another title, but that seems unlikely to me.
The thing that hurts most is the fact that I'm only getting one X-title. I can't get UXM, because Land. I can't get All-New, because I still resent Hopeless for Avengers Arena (yeah, that's right, I really take my grudges seriously). Honestly, I probably should suck it up and get over Arena, but . . . bleh. I don't like Wolverine, so Old Man Logan is out, despite Sorrentino's stunning artwork - he really is one of the best artists at Marvel. I like Laura, but I'm not sure I want to get her solo. Especially since Taylor's Superior Iron Man did little for me.
So there are a few books that I'm excited for (Ultimates seriously looks so damned good). But fewer than I'd hoped.
