Impactful is objective. There was nothing of note in the Rogneto romance. In fact, it could be debated it wasn't real, since it was Legion's memories that Rogue didn't want removed that lead to that “grand love” for her and Magneto. Carey favoritism as far as I'm concerned. He wrote Rogue sleeping with Magneto using Gambit's heart felt words as the reasoning. One of many crappy things Rogue has done to Gambit but romys don't see that.
All the Rogneto relationship did was pit at least three fanbases against each other. If impactful is arguing for months non stop … well, okay. Impactful it was.
The only comment I'll make that does irk me with people's comments in regards to it, is how ageist people will become. My parents had a 20 year gap between them and they were great parents. Most look at things from their pov and experience. While I do know the gap between Magneto and Rogue is larger, every writer of Magneto treats him as he's 40ish, history aside. It is a pick and choose history type philosophy at Marvel. In this particular relationship, the readers needed to beaten over the head with the writers view of Mags age to keep the peanut gallery at bay.
My biological father was almost twenty years older than my mom, my stepdad about fifteen years older. I don't really pay too much attention to age like that as long as the younger person isn't too young. It's when one person is basically a child and the other an adult that it feels like more of an issue for me, or when the relationship has a parent/child dynamic. A girl looking for a father figure... a guy looking for someone who will look up to him...
Lets see, we've had Magneto (treated better than Gambit), Deadpool (not sure how much was a relationship), Longshot (old as dirt and not needed to be touched but is because Mojo-verse).
One thing I do get a little bit is Rogue treating Magneto and Gambit differently. Say you have two kids. One is a little bit of a screw-up, the other is a major screw-up. You end up having different expectations of them based off of that. The one who is a minor screw-up makes a major mistake and the parent comes down harder on them than they would the other because they expect better of them. Gambit is a much better person than Magneto and Rogue expects that of him. Consequently, she would give Magneto a pass on something she would never give Gambit a pass on because the bar for Magneto is set lower, not because she favors Magneto more, but because she knows Remy is fundamentally better than that.
