I've been obsessed with thoughts like that for about three decades now, ever since they really stated showing hints of Bobby's true potential. Probably why I became so fixated on the 'Dragon' stuff regarding Iceman, the idea that it wasn't just wishing for that for the character, but that writers and editors had actually put a lot of time and effort into that story across the decades. The problem is that a lot of that stuff isn't clear to casual fans, and even hardcore fans miss a lot of it unless they are clued in. In the past couple of years I've gone back and reread issues from decades ago and was amazed at how much stuff I missed because of what I didn't know back then. Hidden connections to characters like Moondragon and the Dragon of the Moon... How Iceman's battle with Iron Fist in A VS X may be part of an unrevealed prophecy... How the Iceman story in A + X acted as a set-up for the 'Frozen Arc' in Astonishing X-Men... There is so much stuff there, a wealth of mythology and lore just waiting to be explored and built upon.

I'll probably devote a thread to it at some point when/if I have the time...

I'd love to see a thread like that, but I suppose it could fit inside the appreciation thread as well.

I still have all of my books, but there's stashed away in my parents garage. I can get them whenever I want to, but I'm afraid my mom would have me take all of it rather than bringing in in piece meal - "if you don't take all of it, don't take any at all". And unfortunately, I have a large collection. Maybe not enough to open my own store, but a couple of milk crates worth.

I guess I like the good and the bad stories. The ones where writers have built him up as a God (Astonishing), and also the stories where they've torn him down (The Draco). It's t he stories that dumb him down to his basic level of joke cracking that I don't like. I consider that laziness on the writer's part. Mike Carey had a good run with him in his earlier run, but later on seemed like he was tired of writing him.

What I would have liked to have seen from Marvel, had they done a good Iceman solo book is Iceman in reflection of his life, and contemplating the same "Dr. Manhattan" self-exile from earth thing. I could see the book recalling different moments in his life, and him reflecting on if he would have made the same decision, if things were different with his love life, and how being one of the most powerful beings on the team would affect him and those around him. Would they be afraid of him and his power, could he lead a normal life, and so on.

I think for a lot of writers it probably got frustrating to keep building Iceman up and developing him only to have it be ignored or outright negated by another writer, probably with the direction of an editorial staff that didn't want to deal with the consequences of finally pulling the trigger and taking some things to their proper conclusion. I know it was certainly frustrating for us fans. When you figure the 'Dragon' stuff with Iceman got started as a fan theory in the 1970's and was actively developed by writers starting at least as far back as the early eighties, and here we are almost forty years on from that and little to show for it except decades of buildup that most people just know as something along the lines of 'the stuff with his powers', or maybe some vague kind of connection with Asgard. Once I realized Marvel was apparently finally going somewhere with the storyline, I really devoted myself to diving into the history of it all the past few years. It has at least given me something positive to focus on when much of the current stuff we were getting with Iceman was crap.

I definitely think Iceman needs a 'timeout' from the X-Men to grow and mature somewhat, and if I am right about where the 'real Iceman' went when the current-version took his place, he's probably getting it. I don't know what a current writer like Hickman would do with a realm like the Outer Void, but J. M DeMattis pretty much wrote it as a massive other-worldly war-zone...
