As to how this outing affects his interpretation of the character on film, Singer said, "Well, I think it is interesting that in the early movies he develops a relationship with a girl who he is physically unable to touch. There's something subtextual in that. I'm not sure if I necessarily intended it at the time, but there is something ironic about it in the first and second film -- I'm referring to his relationship with Rogue, played by Anna Paquin.
Except if he wanted to be with a girl he wouldn't have to touch, why in the hell was he endangering his health, even his life, trying to make out with her in the second film? It's things like that that defy all logic. You can read subtext into anything, and it rarely holds up to scrutiny.
There was a interesting post on CBR. By an Iceman fan who really had a great point in regards to Bobby and why he liked him. I'll paraphrase. Iceman is his favorite character because of his awkwardness with women and his jokes. He wasn't the smooth guy like Wolverine or Gambit. He could relate to him and identify with him because he could relate.
It's not easy dealing with the opposite sex.
I do think alienating fans is inevitable. Once the hardcore group goes away, all Marvel and DC will have is the casual and they aren't loyal.
Some people have liked Iceman for his powers, others for his humor, for me Iceman's insecurities with women and other things were a large part(probably about 80%)of why I connected to and related to the character growing up. I liked some of his past relationships so much I collected busts of the female characters just because of that. He didn't feel like he could compete with a genius, or a billionaire who looked like a supermodel for Jean's attentions. He had a domineering father who constantly tore him down and eroded his confidence, and he hid those insecurities under a lot of false bravado, which sabotaged some relationships and caused him to make some poor choices regarding others.
It's like Lucy and Charlie Brown with the football and a later writer comes along and writes Peanuts and decides Charlie Brown just needs to be playing Basketball with someone else instead, which sadly misses the whole damn point.
