Am I wrong in thinking that if they admit in an upcoming issue this Iceman is from an alternate reality, and start to address what happened to the original, that all or most of that conflict would go away?
The fact that you honestly believe there wouldn't be a massive shit-storm if they revealed the gay Iceman as being fake just boggles my mind. You get that Marvel is constantly getting criticized for its poor handling of queer representation, right? So why would you think that them declaring their biggest gay character was a fake would go over well with people? We can't get a gay romance in a main Avengers or X-Men title, with queer characters relegated to tertiary titles. And you think people would be completely OK with Marvel's biggest gay character, the one with the single best shot of getting a romantic storyline in an A-list title, being revealed as being a fake? And presumably being replaced with the straight version?
Or would you be totally OK with it if they revealed that the "real" Bobby is straight, and then stuck him in another reality for all time? Because they are not going to have three goddamn Icemans running around. They're not going to have two adult versions of the character who are completely, 100% identical in every way except that one kisses ladies and one kisses dudes. It's not going to happen. So one of the adult Icemans would have to go. Would you be OK with it if it was the straight one they got rid of? Because otherwise, yeah, Marvel would be eliminating their biggest queer character, which would not be a good look for them.
So no. No, revealing that Iceman is from another reality would, in fact, not result in the conflict going away.
